What is counseling and who are the counselors?

Counseling is configured as an independent profession and the counselor is a professional able to foster self-exploratory processes that help clients to elaborate and implement changes and actions that can improve aspects of their life. The counseling courses have the objective of facilitating in individuals and / or groups a greater contact with their needs, desires, aspirations, potential to interpret the concept of well-being in a complex society in an authentic and vital way. This society is characterized by socio-relational changes that constantly redraw borders and priorities, individual and collective values and needs and have given a strong impulse to the culture of counseling in Italy by introducing, in fact, a perspective of the helping relationship separated from clinical contexts. and / or sanitary.

The skills and knowledge of a counselor pertain to the sphere of relationship and communication, his tools are mainly linked to professional listening and to foster widespread forms of empowerment with a view to a real "maieutic" of the relationship; the counselor "helps to help himself" through an equal relationship, not normative and / or managerial and based on universal ethical values, such as respect, transparency, empathy, the absence of any form of evaluation and / or judgment, the conscious use of communication.

In the meeting between counselor and client, a path is co-constructed aimed at favoring the change desired by the client and identified through clear and defined objectives. For example, a person who finds himself making difficult choices in the workplace, a caregiver in the management of his own life or that of a relative, a person who wishes to expand his social network, a precarious worker who cannot plan his own future , a person who wishes to change jobs or cities; these examples are not exhaustive but indicate some situations in which the counselor can facilitate decision-making and change paths on defined issues.
